Cognitive Frequently Asked Questions :  Print Media

Can I use another manufacturer's media in my Cognitive printer?

Generally, yes, providing the media is within the dimensional limits of the printer (not too wide or narrow or thick), has the same thermal characteristics and indexing cues, and you are not using a label peeler or a cutter-equipped or linerless label printer.

Cutter-equipped printers have more stringent media limitations than standard printers, and we do not recommend using other manufacturer's media in them. Pinnacle can handle most continuous-form media but may jam when using inferior media. The Barcode Blaster CL can be damaged and its warranty will be void if you try to print on anything other than media that is factory-approved for use in the printer.

Print quality may be a problem with some media from other manufacturers. If you are using another manufacturer's media and are experiencing printing problems of any kind, try our media and see if that improves the situation.

Will my printer need adjustment if I use a different type of media?

Usually not, but it depends on the media. If you are using another manufacturer's media or changing to media that has different thermal characteristics some printer adjustment may be required. Such adjustment is carried out via software and is not at all difficult or complicated. Your Cognitive dealer and our Technical Support staff can help, if necessary.

Can I use direct thermal labels in my thermal transfer printer?

All currently manufactured Cognitive thermal transfer printers can use both thermal transfer and direct thermal media. Some printer adjustment may be required for optimum print quality.

Can I use plain paper in my thermal transfer printer?

That depends on what you mean by "plain paper," but generally, the answer is No. Thermal transfer paper has a special smooth coating to assure good dye transfer. Ordinary paper (like bond paper) is too rough for thermal transfer printing. Some photo quality papers may work, but are much more expensive than standard thermal transfer media.

Can I use direct thermal labels outdoors?

Possibly, depending on the label stock and the environment. Some direct thermal stock is especially formulated for harsh environments and can endure some exposure to sunlight. But thermal transfer labels will better endure outdoor use. Contact our Label Sales Department or your local dealer for more information.
