Cognitive Frequently
Asked Questions : Miscellaneous Issues
I printed a test label, and now
when I try to print a regular label all I get is gibberish. What's going
on?
Printing a self-test label places the
printer in hex dump mode. The printer will not print normal labels when
in hex dump mode. Turn the printer OFF and back ON again to restore
normal operation.
Can I install more memory in my
printer?
No. Additional internal memory should
only be installed by factory trained service personnel.
Can I replace a defective
printhead myself?
Solus has a field-replaceable printhead
and platen. Almost anyone can change these parts in the Solus without
special tools or training, and replacement does not affect the printer's
warranty status. But at the present time, this is the only printer with
this feature.
We do not recommend field replacement of
the printhead in other Cognitive printers. Printhead replacement is not
usually difficult, but the printhead is a sensitive component and
relatively expensive. We can replace it with confidence. You might not
be so comfortable with the process. Also, parts replacement by other
than factory-authorized repair centers will void any parts or printer
warranty.
Sometimes when I send data to the
printer there is a long delay before it begins printing. Why?
The printer maps the entire label in
memory before printing begins, and that takes time. The more complex the
label, the longer it takes. Simple labels plot almost instantly. Very
complex labels may take a perceptible time to process, especially if you
are using a Barcode Blazer or one of the other older Cognitive printers.
Newer printers use faster electronics and process labels much faster.
Blaster Advantage printers can store
pre-imaged labels in flash memory, which eliminates most of the
processing time. You may want this feature if "first label
out" time is a serious consideration in your application.
I have a Cognitive printer, and I
understand there have been some recent design changes. Can I upgrade my
printer to the latest design? What will it cost, and do I have to send
the printer to the factory for the upgrade?
Currently-manufactured printers can
usually be upgraded. The exact process and replace depends on the
printer and the nature of the upgrade.
If your printer has flash RAM its
firmware can be upgraded in the field for a nominal fee, or possibly at
no charge. The upgrade does not require printer disassembly. Contact our
Technical Support Department. They can help you determine if your
printer has flash RAM, and what upgrades are available.
If your printer does not have flash RAM,
it must be returned to the factory for an upgrade.
All hardware upgrades must be performed
at the factory.
